Having a protection dog doesn't mean you will have the best hardest working dog there is. There are many kinds of dogs that simply have a different purpose and likely take just as much effort as PSA training. The following are examples of the different kinds of working dogs: Service dogs, Search and Rescue dogs, Hunting dogs, Bomb Detection dogs, Narcotics Detection dogs, Patrol dogs, PSA dogs, Agility dogs, Cattle dogs, Scent Detection Sport dogs, Doc Diver dogs, Military dogs who are normally dual purpose for patrol + either Narcotics or Bomb detection.
Not all protection dogs need to know how to bite people. Is it a handy skill for them to have in case an aggressive person is threatening your life? Yes, but if your dog cannot build up enough drive to want to bite someone when you are in danger, you build up its drive to bark instead. Most cases in police work that involve a patrol dog, end with the suspect surrendering before the dog even gets sent. It is human nature to feel uncomfortable when something like a scary dog is in our way. It is good for your dog to know how to scare someone off before having to bite them. It is in a dog's nature to give warnings.
